Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY] -- [US NAVY]. CDV of USS Detroit. Milwaukee, Wisconsin: W.B. Burke, [1860s].
3 3/4 x 2 1/4 in. CDV on cardstock mount featuring the USS Detroit (toning, light surface soiling, and light wear to mount edges and corners). Photographer's imprint on verso along with modern pencil inscriptions identifying the sloop, her artillery, etc. The "United States Hotel" is visible in the background of the image.
First known as the USS Canadaigua from 1862-1869, the USS Detroit was acquired by the Federal Navy during the Civil War. She was decommissioned immediately after the war and recommissioned in November 1865 as part of the European Squadron until 1869. She was finally named Detroit in May 1869 but kept that name for less than three months before reverting to her original name, Canadaigua.
